Matty G - makeitgood x FatKidOnFire #10

Matty G

makeitgood x FatKidOnFire #10

Remember Sai’s glitch music mix a while back? The first time I properly heard glitch music was the Glitch Mob’s “Crush Mode” (an insane mixtape if you’re in the dark, download it immediately). One of the tracks on said mixtape was a Glitch Mob remix of “West Coast Rocks” by Santa Cruz, California-based dubstep producer Matty G. Peep the track below. As it turns out, Matty G is the next artist to feature in the makeitgood x FatKidOnFire series. And it’s a feature that we’re extremely excited about. Matty G has been going from strength to strength since his first release in 2006. His album “Take You Back” is a must have if you’re a dubstep nut (like Lara and I)…

How old were you when you started producing music? Hmmm. On the computer, probably around 22. I was in bands before I got into the whole Dj thing.

What made you start producing dubstep? Encouragement from Nick Argon. I was making random bass heavy beats when he turned me on to dubstep and suggested I try making it. He dug what I came up with and the rest is history.

Best set you have ever played has been? Probably to an empty dance floor, haha! Seriously though, I was proud of how I did on the Scion Tour with the Dub Police gang. They’re high company to roll with so I had to be on my A game. I think the pressure was good, and I played some of the best sets I can remember.

Any new releases coming our way from you? My next release that’s set in stone is “Watching You/ The Realness” on Argon records due out in November 2010.

Your favourite track you’ve produced has been…? Hmmm, that’s a tough one. I really dig “Nuff a Dis” featuring Luv Fyah off of my album “Take You Back”.

Best producer/dj you’ve played a set with? Either Chef or N-Type. Both are incredible Djs, and just straight kill it live.

What advice would you give to upcoming producers of dubstep? Do your own thing. Come from the heart. Don’t worry about what other people are going to think ‘cause it’s going to cloud your creative judgement. Other than that, find some equipment you’re comfortable with and master it. Hopefully you have some homies to help you out with the learning process, if not, get on the internet and ask some questions.

Whats the dubstep scene like in California? It’s booming. People in L.A., San Francisco, and even some of the smaller cities in Cali really know their tunes, and are actively following new developments in the larger dubstep scene. There are a lot of great parties in the States, but in my opinion, the Smog crew in L.A. is throwing the best party in the country, which says a lot about the California scene.

Turntables or CDJs? Turntables with the occasional CD (not by choice). And I’m talkin’ records and dubs, no Serratto. Not dissin’, I’m just a better Dj with records without having to mess with a laptop.

What software do you use when your producing a track? I’m the only person I know who uses Digital Performer. That’s what I learned on and that’s what I’ve stuck too, though Logic keeps looking more and more appealing by the minute. Other than that, a lot of samples.
