It’s been a quiet month here at FatKidOnFire. Things have been picking up in the day job, so unfortunately I’ve had to take a bit of time out from the site. However, the site’s back tonight with a brand new MakeItGood x FatKidOnFire feature (and mixtape) and an all new brand feature. Stay locked and sorry for down time! As always, keep your eyes on our Facebook, Twitter, Soundcloud and Mixcloud accounts.
Our next MakeItGood x FatKidOnFire feature sees us sit down and chat with Tay and Angie, otherwise known as dubstep duo The Steppahs. Hailing from Manchester, these guys have been making big moves within the dubstep scene for a while now and have played alongside some massive names! If any of you are attending Outlook Festival this year (we can’t afford it unfortunately), judging by the standard of their exclusive MakeItGood x FKOF mix is, make sure you reach their set. It’s going to go off! Check out the feature below and the mix up for free download after. Finally, peep the The Steppahs on Twitter, YouTube and Soundcloud.
How long have you both been producing music for? We’ve been producing around 2 years, making steady progress. We will have more studio time as of September so will be able to get on and finish our various projects.
What made you start? Curiosity and love of music. We’re aspiring to make an occupation out of something we love.
What software do you use to produce your tracks? Tay uses Logic and Angie uses Reason. Some of our favourite plug ins are the FM8, Albino, Predator and the Sonalkis gates and compressors.
Turntables or CDJs? Turntables are our first loves without a doubt. You cant beat Vinyl but CDJs are convenient for playing dubs we get sent from other producers. Its so much cheaper to burn a cd than to get a dubplate cut and CDJs are in every club these days.
Best set you’ve played has been…? We’ve just got back from playing at All Out Dubstep in Sweden which was amazing. Also we were lucky enough to play at Outlook Festival in Croatia last year, trekking up hills with our records to get to the fort was an adventure! Were looking forward to playing there again this year.
Any new releases we can look forward to? We can’t say anything for definite yet, but we’ve just been signed to Cooly G’s label and agency ‘Dub Organizers’ so keep your eyes and ears peeled!
What music are you listening to at the moment? On the dubstep front Silkie, Quest, V.I.V.E.K., Jkenzo, Mala, Zed Bias, Kromestar, Jsparrow, Kahn, Ruckspin, Biome, Dom Hz, Chimpo, Indigo, Synkro, Mensah and Versa are all making amazing music right now. Also drum and bass producers such as Jubei, Icicle, S.P.Y, Marcus Intalex, Break, Loadstar, Commix, Dbridge and all the autonomic crew. We’re into a lot of tech and house stuff like Drexciya, Ellen Allien, Moderat, Ramadanman, Boddika, Objekt, Julio Bashmore, Addison Groove… Never stop listening to good old soul, funk and hip-hop. Hard to keep this answer short we could go on for days, too many names to mention really!
Any advice to upcoming DJs/Producers? Most importantly is to get yourself heard. Take any opportunities to play out. Radio is a great way of playing your music to people. There’s so many internet radio stations now or you can even just get on ustream and go out live whenever you want. You’ve just got to believe in what you’re doing and hopefully the right opportunites will come your way. Let it grow naturally and you’ll achieve much more.
We’ve been slamming this mix all afternoon, and it’s already one of our all time favourites from the MakeItGood x FatKidOnFire series. The Steppahs have gone 110% hard with this one, so grab the free download and shout the girls if you feel what they’ve done!
