Re-Interview #5

We’re doing pretty well for interviews here at FatKidOnFire. It’s also good to be finally linking with the FKOF OGs (as we did with Bake Designs last week) – tonight sees us chatting to another old friend.

It was almost a year ago when Self Gained Treasures was first featured on FKOF. A lot’s happened for SB since then so we thought it was high time we had a catch up to see what’s gone on, what’s new and what the future holds for SGT…

It’s been almost a year since the Self Gained x FKOF feature, what’s changed for the brand since then? A year? Wow the time has gone so fast. Well when you first picked up on what I was doing back then, I had just kind of started putting the SGT word about; I had this whole plan mapped out on my head of what to do who I wanted to work with, what things would look like etc. I then had to put everything on the back burner for a while due to my girl having our first baby. So really not a bad reason to slow down. I just didn’t expect it would take up as much time as it did (the whole preparation period) but I was wrong. Haha! Brand wise I kept the name alive by trying to blog and post on Facebook as and when I could just so people knew SGT wasn’t dead. Towards the end of 2010 (literally like December 30th) things started to pick up real quick, just out of the blue. This carried on into January and each month since then it’s been overwhelming how the support has grown and continued to grow.

I made a few small changes/ improvements. I got new custom neck tags made up and bottom tags for the front of the shirts which gives a much more professional finish to the shirts. I cleared out any shirts that I thought didn’t suit the whole SGT theme, which was more then half of what I had on site at the time, I took more time in how I presented the shirts and made the first official lookbook which I handed out via emails only last month.

Oh I also attended the Urban Platform sale back in February – the first sale I have sold at. I was really shocked that people had heard and knew about the brand!

You’ve just dropped your ‘Re-Introduction’ lookbook with a mixture of old and new SGT gear. What’s the thinking behind the move? Due to not being able to launch how I wanted to last year and also for the long period of time (pretty much the second half of 2010) that I didn’t drop or update anything new on the site. The re-introduction was just my own way of starting fresh, without fully starting from the beginning. Because some people already knew about or had seen SGT or a ‘Get Doe‘ t-shirt before, I couldn’t just scrap everything and start over, so I thought a re-introduction would be the best idea.

When can we expect more from Self Gained – any exciting collabs or further designs to look out for in the near future? Well since the re-introduction collection is only a month old, I’m waiting until the end of April to do a second spring drop. This will consist of new colour ways of some of the shirts in the re-introduction collection. Reason being, when I dropped the re-introduction I was getting asked for this colour and that colour and instead of getting them printed up there and then, I waited to see how many people would ask for different colours and then take time to try and please most of the requests. I am hoping to drop a summer collection in June or July. Not 100% sure right now, but there definitely will be a summer collection.

Collaboration-wise there have been a few talks but nothing concrete, but if all goes well expect a couple collabs before 2011 is out.

Has your opinion of the streetwear scene in the UK changed? Changed? Hmm. I wouldn’t say it has changed – not at the moment anyway. I can see changes happening but I wouldn’t say it has changed yet. Change is good though right? Keeps us on our toes.

As with our chat with Ben at Bake Designs last week, things have been quiet from SB over at SGT for the past few months. That’s no bad thing, leading to the brand dropping the ‘Re-Introduction Collection’ accompanied by the superb lookbook. We’re excited to see what SB’s got lined up next – we’re pretty sure it’ll be as dope as always. Until we have the lowdown on his next move, stay locked on the Self Gained website, Twitter, Facebook and the all important webstore.

If you have any thoughts on what SB has had to (re-)say, or thoughts on anything else you’ve read fire us a comment or get in touch via emailTwitterFacebook or the FKOF TakesQuestions page.
