Kaiju – Burn Down Babylon / Wrong Tings

FKOF Review

As far as we know, longtime FKOF fam Kaiju are the only producers to be exclusively signed to Mala‘s DEEP MEDi imprint. It’s a partnership that works – some of the best bass music being created released by one of the best bass music imprints.

It’s hard to believe that we’ve not had a release from the duo since their MEDi debut with the sublime Justice / Creeper in May last year – but, today, the wait is over. MEDi093 sees the first Kaiju 10″ and they’ve not disappointed…

Continuing the dubwise efforts Paul and Jamie documented on sold-out releases with Lion Charge and Ruffcut, the latest MEDi white label once again highlights the producers’ ability to craft historically-infused yet forward-facing dub music. Both tunes to appear on MEDi093 have been floating around in various mixes for a while now, but as with all Kaiju material the release is destined to sell well. When it’s this good, that’s not much of a surprise.

The A-side features Burn Down Babylon; pondering basslines and organic hits from the keys and organ. The duo are known for their clean and spacious production style, and this latest MEDi outing is a prime example of this often underutilised skill. Flip the 10″ record and you’ll discover Wrong Tings. It epitomises the almost-live feel of Kaiju material – material that would be well matched performed by a live band. Just listen to that sumptuous double bass! Wrong Tings is just oh-so-right, a brilliant tune in the run-up to the summer sunshine…
